287 Google Base Google Base is a huge database of products, services, and information located at http://base.google.com/ Google Base is a free storage platform for information that is structured so that it is easy for Google to understand. Google allows you to advertise Google Base listings on Google AdWords. Eventually, the Google AdSense program will move from just displaying advertisements to displaying recommended content from Google Base, Google Video, or products sold via Google Checkout, which Google may be able to get a cut on selling. Their goal is simply to create the most efficient recommending engine and marketplace possible. Google Coop & Google Custom Search Google allows individuals to create custom topic specific search engines. Using this, hosing video content, offering Google Base, having the most efficient ad network, and having the largest search market-share allows Google to tap vertical search from many different angles. Google Coop may also be useful in helping Google learn what types of queries certain sites are good at answering, and which types of queries those sites are bad at answering. It also provides Google an additional layer of feedback on how relevant their core search results are for specific queries and verticals. More Eggs in More Baskets! For the time being, general search is exceptionally important, but as time passes, these niche databases will be used more frequently. If you have a local business, it is probably worth the time to submit your business details to local search engines. If you sell a wide variety of products, it is probably worth your time to submit a free feed to Google Base. Creating and positioning a site that is able to be listed in some of the vertical databases (like Google News for example) gives your business an unfair advantage over other businesses that are not. Search engines vying for buzz and market share will tap the vertical databases using increasingly aggressive and creative techniques. The line between vertical search and global search will only blend more as time passes.
