Viral Marketing & the
Social Web
Search engines aim to emulate searchers and web users. If you acquire links that
real people click on, buy from, and share with friends, then your site will rank well.
The days of working your way to the top of Google by buying or automating
thousands of junky links to a new domain have come and gone. The opening post
in this thread http://www.webmasterworld.com/forum12/3047.htm describes how
SEO and link building have become a more holistic game.
Viral marketing is the fastest, cheapest, and most effective form of link
building.
Problems with Manufacturing Relevancy
Artificial Reputation
No matter how smart you are, if you artificially manufacture 100% of your website
reputation, Google can probably detect it one way or another.
Google collects an immense amount of data, and user data may heavily augment
link reputation as being an important piece of the algorithm.
There will always be good ideas you can do, and under-priced marketing
opportunities, but if something is not working, odds are that it may help to look at
what you are doing from a more holistic approach.
From what I have seen, most people selling SEO services are not highly focused
on relationships. Real marketing, based on social relationships, is going to be much
harder for your competitors to compete against. You cannot just ask for a quality
editorial link from the Wall ramthoughts Journal, but if you figure out how to get one then
your competitor is at a disadvantage.
