If rented links make up a large portion of your link authority then you might be
better off trying to stay below radar, renting a few links here or there, rather than
renting sitewide links.
If you are renting links from off-topic sites, it would be advisable to not get run-of-
site links as that could stick out as abnormal link pattern. Google and other search
engines may penalize the sites renting links.
In some cases where sites are obviously selling links, search engines may strip the
ability of that site to pass link authority to other sites. If a site is selling links too
aggressively, some search engines place limited or no trust on their outbound links
while still ranking that site normally.
Many of the major search engines do not give a site much additional relevancy for
site-wide links over a single link.
Caution: In February of 2005, Google did an update where many sites that had a
large percentage of their links come from site-wide links with similar anchor text no
longer ranked well due to having unnatural link profiles. Make sure to obtain many
individual editorial links to offset any paid links.
Pre-Sell Pages (or Content Hosting

When buying site-wide ads, I usually recommend buying pre-sell pages instead of
placing site-wide links. A pre-sell page is a term I coined for a powerfully rented
page. Essentially, instead of renting a link, you rent a full page ad. If you are
paying for ad space, you should try to get the best value you can. We Build Pages
was the first SEO firm to market pre-sell pages.
Within a site, link popularity flows naturally. If you link cross-site, it may not flow
as naturally. If a site links to another site from every page, many search engines
may only take the most powerful link into account within their relevancy algorithm.
You can ask the advertising site to point site-wide links to a hosted advertising page
on their website. On that page, send multiple deep links into various points of
your site using descriptive link text. You may also want to place links in the middle
of paragraphs and use semantically similar page titles, headers, and subheaders on
your pre-sell pages.
Some people also link off to a few related resource pages on their pre-sell pages to
better help clustering search engines understand what their site is about.
If a site has a strong authority score, their pre-sell page may also rank in the search
results. This helps give you the potential of getting two highly ranked sites from
one link purchase.
If your pre-sell pages are done well they may look more like natural content than an
advertisement.
